CHURCHES

Aberdeen Unitarian Church

A church that has been in Aberdeen since 1833 and as part of UK Unitarianism places great emphasis on freedom, reason and toleration in religion.

Canonmills Church

Previously a penny school attended by Robert Louis Stevenson, then a mission hall and a base for the 46th Edinburgh Company, Boys’ Brigade, today the historic Canonmills building is home to our vibrant church. We are an ecumenical church which operates within the principles of independence and freedom of thought, welcoming people from all backgrounds. In 2026 we became members of Scottish Fair Trade and committed to be a fair trade church.

Inverkip Church

Inverkip Church in Inverclyde, established in 1188, has around 300 members and became a Fair Trade Church in May 2017.

Kelvin West Church

For many years now we have pursued ecological concerns: we are a designated Eco-congregation and have twice gained an eco-congregation award.  This reflects a regular focus in worship and the congregation’s newsletter on environmental and other justice themes; our commitment to fair trade; a concern for ethical investment and energy-saving and recycling.

St Silas Episcopal Church

St Silas has been running a regular fair trade stall for over twenty years and has been a Fairtrade Church for 16 years. We aim to encourage the church to consider fair trade beyond buying from the stall by hosting occasional specific events and including interviews in the services during Fairtrade Fortnight and through regular posts on the church Facebook group.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Glasgow Caledonian University

GCU has a longstanding commitment to Fairtrade. It was first accredited as a Fairtrade University in 2012, and in partnership with GCU Students’ Association has achieved a 3-Star award in the Fairtrade Universities and Colleges Award in 2024-2026 cohort.

Glasgow Clyde College

Glasgow Clyde College has been committed to Fair Trade for a number of years. In 2017, the College gained status as a Fairtrade College.

New College Lanarkshire

Students from the Faculty of Supported Learning at New College Lanarkshire have been involved in various Fair Trade events and initiatives, and the College supports Fair Trade.

The University of Strathclyde

A Fairtrade University since 2006, we work closely with the Fairtrade Town Campaign to raise awareness and increase availability of Fairtrade products in St Andrews.

COUNCILS

Aberdeen City Council 

Aberdeen was the first city in Scotland to achieve Fairtrade status in 2004.

Aberdeenshire Council

The council passed a resolution back in November 2013 to support Fairtrade. A number of towns and villages right across Aberdeenshire have achieved and renewed Fairtrade status including Stonehaven, Inverurie, Alford, Huntly, Mid Formartine and, Peterhead and Buchan.

City of Edinburgh Council

Edinburgh has held Fairtrade City status since 2004. We officially support fair trade and help the city work towards fair trade goals.

Dumfries and Galloway Council

Dumfries and Galloway became a Fairtrade zone in October 2017 through the combined efforts of ourselves, Loch Arthur Camphill Community (our Fairtrade Employer Champion) and Fairtrade campaigners from Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Dunscore, Kirkcudbright and Wigtown.

Dundee City Council

Dundee is a Fair Trade city, and Dundee City Council is committed to promoting and raising awareness of Fair Trade.

East Ayrshire Council

Fairtrade Zone status for East Ayrshire on 7th October 2016.

East Lothian Council

Glasgow City Council

Glasgow became an accredited Fairtrade City in 2006 and renewed this status in 2013.

Inverclyde Council

The district has been a recognised Fairtrade area since 2013 and the latest extension secured by the council will run until 2023. The status acknowledges the work locally, including by the Inverclyde Fairtrade Steering Group led by retired school teacher Morag Paul.

Midlothian Council

Midlothian Council is committed to ethical procurement and the promotion of Fair Trade with our Business Community.

North Lanarkshire Council

North Lanarkshire has been awarded North Lanarkshire Fairtrade Zone Status in recognition of the support and awareness the local schools, churches, businesses and communities have given to Fairtrade products.

Perth & Kinross Council

Perth and Kinross has been at the forefront of the Fairtrade Towns movement in Scotland. Aberfeldy became the first Fairtrade Town in Scotland in 2002 and Kinross-shire became the first Fairtrade County in Scotland in August 2005. Perth became a Fairtrade City in 2005.

Renfrewshire Council

Renfrewshire achieved Fairtrade Zone status in 2009, after a campaign led by Renfrewshire Council and involving local Fairtrade groups, schools, churches and businesses.

South Lanarkshire Council 

South Lanarkshire is a Fairtrade Zone. In February 2020, South Lanarkshire renewed its Fairtrade Zone status.

West Lothian Council

West Lothian is a Fairtrade Zone with four Fairtrade Towns (Bathgate, Linlithgow, Livingston, Whitburn). The county also has a Fairtrade Village, in Uphall and a mini Fairtrade Zone in Fauldhouse and Breich Valley.

NETWORKS

BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK

BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK is a network of independent shops and suppliers dedicated to promoting Fair Trade retail in the UK. BAFTS provides a structure of accountability to its members who adhere to the 10 Principles of Fair Trade as set out by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

BAFTS works with UK-based independent shops and suppliers who partner with disadvantaged producer groups. BAFTS offers a way that they can have their commitment to Fair Trade recognised and be a part of the wider Fair Trade movement and community. Membership is determined by peer-to-peer assessment which takes place annually and ensures that members can provide evidence of their fulfilment of the 10 Principles of Fair Trade.
