Karena Jarvie has been an individual member for over five years and she’s involved in the Perth and Kinross Fairtrade Zone Group.

“I am very proud that Scotland is a Fair Trade Nation and for this to be meaningful we need to make sure that as many people across the country from young to old know the difference that buying Fair Trade goods makes.

Some of the Perth and Kinross Fairtrade Champions

I am fortunate in that I live in Kinross-shire, which was the first Fairtrade County in Scotland. In this area we sell Traidcraft through churches, promote the 90kg Rice challenge from JTS in schools and churches, submit articles about Fair Trade to the local newsletter most months and have a coffee morning during Fairtrade Fortnight. I also have a committee to promote the Perth and Kinross Fairtrade Zone and with that we are fortunate to have 12 Councillors who are Fair Trade Champions and they support our initiatives such as the encouragement of schools to buy Fairtrade footballs from Bala Sport or attendance at our Fairtrade Fortnight events such as our Fairtrade Reception.

My favourite Fair Trade shop is All Things Fair in Blairgowrie which stocks an amazing range of Fair Trade products from Divine chocolate, Kilombero Rice, Eswatini curry sauces and chutneys from JTS and beautiful clothes from Thought. My favourite Fairtrade product is a Bala Fairtrade Football as I think they should be compulsory items for all schools in a football mad Fair Trade Nation!

Our group have been very fortunate to receive three community grants.

Our first one allowed us to buy window stickers which can be used in shops, schools, homes or cars to spread the word about Perth & Kinross being a Fairtrade Zone!

Our second grant was to buy Fairtrade Bala Sport footballs to be able to run a Fairtrade football festival.

Our third grant was to buy some Fairtrade Bala Sport rugby balls to give to schools when talking to them about Fair Trade.”

What are Karena’s thoughts about membership?

‘The Scottish Fair Trade Forum helped me to set up a group and we were able to achieve Fairtrade Zone status for Perth and Kinross. I am a member as I really value the support the Forum can give to anyone who would like to get involved in promoting Fair Trade in their area.’
