We’re really excited to launch Swap the System – a new campaign from Scottish Fair Trade that encourages us to call for a rethink of the systems that shape our economy.
We hear a lot about making better choices – buying ethically, living sustainably, doing our bit. And those things do matter. But they can only take us so far if the system itself is driving inequality, environmental harm and exploitation.
Swap the System is about zooming out and looking at the bigger picture, and imagining something better.
At the heart of the campaign are eight “swaps”: from profit at any cost to putting people first, from hidden harms to fair pay and safe work, and from short-term gain to protecting the future. They’re simple ideas, but together they point towards a very different kind of economy.
The campaign brings these ideas to life through a series of short films and a collaborative zine, full of creative contributions, reflections and challenges to the status quo produced by our Youth Collective.
Importantly, this isn’t a campaign designed for young people, it has been shaped with them. Our Youth Collective has played a central role in conceptualising the campaign, bringing energy, insight and a clear sense that things don’t have to stay the way they are.
This is about more than awareness. It’s about building a shared sense that change is possible, and that we all have a role to play in it.
