In a world where traditional business models take centre stage, the need to reach a sustainable economy prompts a crucial conversation. To achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a reconsideration of these models is imperative, as they contribute significantly to the environmental and social crises we face globally. Addressing sustainability, social impact, and environmental concerns, the design of better business models becomes a crucial endeavour for a future-proof society.

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) recognises that mainstream businesses prioritise profit maximization above all else, often at the expense of people, planet, health, quality, and positive societal impact. Rooted in a wilful ignorance of the repercussions of their actions, these profit-centric businesses contribute to the destruction of our planet, extreme poverty, and inequality. This culture of entrepreneurship, centred solely around financial gains, perpetuates exploitative practices and environmental degradation.

However, profitability need not be synonymous with a profit-centric approach. An increasing number of enterprises challenge this conventional model, demonstrating that financial success can coexist with a commitment to sustainable practices, encompassing both people and the planet. This emerging shift embraces a triple bottom line—considering people, planet, and profit—as three interdependent aspects that should be simultaneously considered while designing a business model.

The WFTO is amplifying the voices of Fair Trade Enterprises, urging a fundamental revolution in business design. They believe that traditional approaches are unsustainable for both people and the planet, and they are championing examples of successful businesses designed for positive impact, illustrating how entrepreneurship can drive the change we seek in our climate protests, closing the pay gap, and shaping an environmentally and socially sustainable future.

The #BusinessRevolution campaign launched on the 1st of February 2024, calling for sustainable business models designed for positive impact, prioritising local communities, social responsibility, supplier relationships, and environmental protection—areas often overlooked by large corporations.
