Fair Trade in Nurseries & Schools
Teaching and learning about Fair Trade fits within the Curriculum for Excellence, and can support pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed in our interconnected world. Fair Trade aims to tackle global inequality and injustice and provides a perspective from which to consider global issues. Fair Trade education supports and can be embedded in global citizenship, learning for sustainability, anti-racist education and decolonising education. Fair Trade supports the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals, and a great place to start when considering Fair Trade education, is the 10 Principles of Fair Trade.
Fairtrade Foundation
Fairtrade Award
Your school or nursery can take your commitment to Fair Trade a step further while being rewarded for your work by becoming a Fairtrade School. The Fairtrade Foundation runs the Fairtrade School Awards that take your school or nursery on a journey from awareness about Fair Trade through to embedding it into the life of the school and local community.
There are currently around 100 schools and nurseries across Scotland involved in the Awards. Register your school or nursery to become a Fairtrade School.
Many of these schools and nurseries are learning about Fairtrade cotton school uniforms with Koolskools, are completing the 90kg Rice Challenge, and are Fair Trade Finders.
There are very many other ways of exploring Fair Trade. Fairtrade Schools have a great range of nursery, primary and secondary resources, and Scotland’s Development Education Centres have a lot of experience with Fair Trade education.
